Gathering Friends "Restore" Scholarship

The purpose of Gathering Friends’ “Restore” Scholarship is to provide one single mother with a scholarship to pay towards their education. At Gathering Friends we know knowledge is power and we want to restore a single mother’s dream to further their education.
 

  • Awards: A maximum of a $1000.00 scholarship – one (1) scholarship will be awarded

  • Eligibility: This contest is open to college bound Single Mothers residing in Michigan who will attend any junior college, four year college, vocational or trade school.

  • Close Date: All essays should be received by October 15 at midnight

  • Award Date: The scholarship will be awarded on November 12

Applicants can choose one of the two essay themes below:
Theme choice #1: The Experience of Overcoming a Fear
Theme choice #2: If you could Change Someone’s Life

 

The essay must be original. (No copy righted or previously published essays accepted).
Length of essay must be between 700 – 750 words.
The cover page must follow the below format:

  • Title

  • An essay by:

  • Home address: City, State, Zip Code

 

The essay must be received no later than October 15 at midnight

Persons submitting essays thereby grant Gathering Friends the right to keep and exercise full publishing rights to the essay.

The decision of the judges and Gathering Friends will be final. Winners will be required to show proof that they are enrolled in a four year college or university at the time the essay was submitted.

Awards will be granted upon the written/verification or transcript of any junior college, four year college, vocational or trade school which has been confirmed that the individual is enrolled. Actual enrollment is required. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the scholarship.

 

All awards must be claimed within 18 months after the announcement date to be valid.

 

Criteria Ratings for Essay (possible points):

  • Development of Theme – Well developed theme will cover major points, and supplying enough information for understanding (25 pts.)

  • Progression – Composition progressing from beginning to the end in a logical flow of information (20 pts.)

  • Readability – Concise prose that sticks to the point and does not ramble (i.e. keep reader’s attention) (20 pts.)

  • Grammar – Correct sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, using traditional phrases and paragraphs (15 pts.)

  • Spelling (15 pts.)

  • Punctuation (10 pts.)

 

* Please note that GPA and financial need of student will factor into the final decision of the scholarship recipient.
* Please submit official letter of acceptance to
any junior college, four year college, vocational or trade school.

 

Gathering Friends’ executive board and advisory board members and their family members are not eligible to participate.
